The Story

Designed by Pierre Jeanneret for the postgraduate hostel of Panjab University in Chandigarh, this four-door cabinet retains its original institutional stencil, PG HOSTEL 115, intact after more than sixty years of use. The postgraduate hostel buildings at Panjab University formed part of the broader Chandigarh campus program and represent one of its residential components.

Solid teak throughout. The body is divided into two equal bays, each closed by a pair of hinged doors with recessed circular pulls and original wooden toggle latches. Each bay contains one interior shelf. Six tapered cylindrical legs support the body, three across the front and three across the rear, a leg form characteristic of Jeanneret’s residential and hostel furniture for the Chandigarh program.

The teak has developed a deep, warm patina over decades of institutional life. Offered as found, with wear consistent with its age and origin. Lightly cleaned and unrestored.
