Designed by Pierre Jeanneret for the furnishing program of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh, this pedestal unit retains its original institutional stencil, HC/CH/JR.DIV / Rs.39/1961, placing it within the court’s Junior Division and dating the piece to 1961.
Constructed entirely in solid teak, the unit features three drawers on the left: two narrow drawers positioned side by side at the top, with one full-width drawer below. The right side is open, forming a rectangular storage bay for files. Each drawer is fitted with a circular cutout pull routed directly into the drawer face. The piece stands on compass A-frame legs, characteristic of the Chandigarh furniture program.
Scaled for use beneath or alongside a working surface, the unit reflects Jeanneret’s approach to institutional furniture: compact, functional, and architecturally resolved.
The teak has developed a deep, warm patina consistent with more than sixty years of institutional use. Offered as found. Lightly cleaned and unrestored.
